Southwestern Excursion
We went on an all day whitewater rafting trip in the Arkansas River. This rafting trip is ranked in the top ten white water trips nationally. The morning part of the trip was 5 miles through Bighorn Canyon with class II & III rapids. Then we had lunch on the beach. After lunch we converted our boat to an oar boat and let our guide do most of the paddling since we were going to head into class IV rapids. The next 10 miles of the river was called the Royal Gorge. It had seven miles of class III & IV rapids. We had a run in with a big rock that bent the oar & almost popped me out of the boat. The last run was very exciting. I did not know they were taking pictures in the afternoon, but you can see the intense look on our faces. ( especially Lin's ) The scenery was also beautiful. The canyon walls stretched up 1,000 ft on either side in places. The Royal Gorge train ran by twice while we were rafting and the people on board waved at us. Our muscles are a little sore after 6 hours of rafting, but we are ready to do it again!
