The town of Aguas Calientes was quite nice. Once all the tourists left for Machu Picu it was quiet - very much a ghost town. Our hostel offered a breakfast room service but only between 5-7am though, so obviously I picked 7 as our delivery time, and it apparently requires clothes to open the door...
Since our checkout was 9am, we used the spare hour walk around the quiet town - a very different sight when no one is trying to sell you things on the street. Before leaving Cusco, we had to change our train time so we could leave by daylight so we could see the Sacred Valley. Alas, this wasn't to be. Upon sitting, ready to depart the station, we were attacked by the American couple sitting opposite us. For the next two hours, our ears were completely chewed off; we heard their entire life story, and that of their children. One benefit, however, was the offer to come to Lima to stay with this odd pair of 60 something year old American hippies, Pat and Irene O'Connor in their condo in Miraflores, Lima for no charge. So in the end, the extra $28 US we spent on the train upgrade would be made up by free accommodation (and pot).
Eventually we made it back to Cusco, after turning down an offer for a tour of the Sacred Valley with them. We organised a ziplining trip in the Sacred Valley at the hostel, and then met up with the Brits from the Inca trail group at the local Irish Pub. We arranged to meet up again whenever we were in the other's area, relived hilarious Billy moments ("Have you ever been to Chocky Wocky DooDah?") and fulfilled our cravings fro Guinness/cider.
