We woke up Friday to a much more sunny Byron Bay so we drove up to Cape Byron and its lighthouse where the most easterly point of the Australian mainland is. It took us quite a while on the walking trail to get there as many trees had been blown onto the path during the storm. It really was beautiful up there and we were also very lucky to see a pod of dolphins riding the waves! After exploring the small town which is fairly hippy with organic food cafes etc and more travellers than Noosa, we left for Surfers Paradise which is back up to the gold coast towards Brisbane. We didnt have much time in Surfers Paradise but from what we could tell its the Australian version of Magalluf! Very built up and lots of clubs, bars etc. We left Surfers on Saturday morning to fly to Hamilton island.
Hamilton island is one of just 7 out of the 74 Whitsunday islands that have resorts on and we thought it would be a good base from which to explore! Flying into the island was pretty amazing. The Whitsundays are actually the tops of old volcanic mountains that were flooded during the ice age. We were given a golf buggy with our apartment as this is the mode of transport everyone uses here as the island is fairly small. Its all quite surreal really with parrakeets and peacocks roaming the streets!
Yesterday we took a trip out on a catamaran to hardy reef pontoon on the barrier reef which was pretty amazing as you might imagine! We did a bit of snorkelling and went in a half submarine around the reef. Sophie also did a dive and saw a groper fish which is about the same size as her! On the way back the reef had formed small waterfalls as the tide was higher on one side than the other which was stunning. Back on Hamilton, we went up to one tree hill which is a famous spot to watch sunsets and it really was pretty spectacular!
Today we took a helicopter to whitehaven beach which is 7 kilometers of pure white sand and is No 3 beach in the world! We also flew over the most famous landmark in the Whitsundays, Hill inlet, which is in the photo above! It was just amazing! We walked along the beach for a while before flying back and got caught in a small rainstorm which made the flight very amusing!
We have both loved the Whitsundays and it really has been an amazing experience coming here! We fly to Sydney tomorrow but wish we could have just a few more days here!!
