Brisbane, Noosa, Byron Bay and Surfers Paradise
We left Perth on Monday after a very sad goodbye at the airport with the girls! We had such a good time with them and loved Western Australia!
Later that evening we arrived in Brisbane and stayed in the centre of the city with fab views from our 51st floor room! However the rain came down hard so we didnt have too much time to enjoy it! The following day we wandered around the city and down to eagle street pier but the main thing to do here is shop and you will all be pleased to hear that i have not shopped since we started our travels! So we left for the Lone Pine Koala sanctuary which is about 15 mins south of Brisbane. Its a great place to visit as there are not many tourists and it is set within the forest. They have over 100 koalas of all different ages. I got to hold one which was amazing! His name was Sumo and he stank! But was so cute! Jack got a bit scared though so just watched! We then went into the red kangaroo enclosure where we didnt realise you can stroke and feed them so when one of the skippys started chasing us, you can imagine how much i was crying with laughter at the speed Jack ran to the exit!!! I did manage to feed them and they are very gentle animals! We were also lucky enough to see a joey Koala come out his mums pouch which was amazing!!
After the sanctuary we drove 2hrs North of the city to a small holiday resort town called Noosa on the sunshine coast. We stayed in a resort on Laguna Bay and after a night of heavy rain we were pleasantly surprised with the weather! We had scattered clouds but were able to sunbathe on the beach most of the day! Noosa Heads has a lovely buzzy atmosphere even though its winter season now. Jack ventured out quite far into the surf and the waves were pretty intense! We had dinner in a bistro at a latin themed night but i couldnt get Jack up to salsa with me!
Just to give you an insight into the weather around Brisbane and southern queensland, these have been some of the news headlines over the past 48 hours for: 'Gold coast issues state of emergency for floods and winds', 'Queensland sees the highest rain fall for 17 years', 'Stage 2 cyclone alert'!. (The good news is the dams are filling to capacity and the drought it over! ;-). We did contemplate staying in Noosa and not driving down to the gold coast but whats a bit of rain to english people!!
So the drive down was fine and there were actually blue skies around on our way to Byron Bay which is 2 hours south of Brisbane on the gold coast. We arrived at Byron about 2pm and had a walk along the bay but the skies started to cloud over and the wind got pretty stong very quickly! It started to rain just after lunch and its 8pm now and still hasnt stopped. When i say rain i mean really really heavy rain where you can barely see in front of you! I started to write this blog earlier only for a blackout to occur twice so we went back to the hotel only for a blackout to happen there aswell! So we were trapped in our room for a bit with gale force winds outside knocking trees down! We decided to venture out to find food and couldnt find anything open for quite a while! We then found a pizzeria which was lucky as Byron feels like a ghost town right now! The lighthouse is even on which shows how little visibility there is at the moment! But we wanted life adventures and i guess this is one! We are both finding it very funny!!
We leave for Surfers Paradise tomorrow and hear that the storm is heading south so hopefully we wont be stuck with it too much longer!!
