We finally arrived in Perth at our Hostel Billabong Backpackers @ 2am on 14th July after leaving WakeUp in Sydney at 10am on 13th July!!!
We arrived at Sydney airport (a little bit annoyed as it was packed due to the bloody Pope arriving for his World Youth Day tour, in his Pope Mobile!!) We got to the Domestic Departures desk ready to check in only to find out that our flight had been delayed by 10 hrs. Having said that we were put up in a 5* Hotel near the airport until out plane was actually ready to depart. So all was fine there.
After much needed sleep in nice confortable 5* bed we were back at the airport for 6pm later that day. We went through check-in and found out the flight had been put back another hour! (9pm!) so what should have initially been a flight for 8:30am was now 9pm! We eventually got on the plane and it took 4 1/2 hours to fly to Perth over Melbourne, Adelaide and then over the Nullabor Dessert. We finally landed in Perth a little worse for ware and went to collect our luggage. Luckily for Rach her's was one of the very first off the plane and onto the carosel so we naturally presumed that mine wouldnt be far behind! How wrong could we be. Half an hour later and my bag is still no where to be seen! Rach looks at me and says "Are you getting a bit worried?" to which I simply replyed "YES!". A few minutes later still no luggage so im really starting to panic when a Qantas rep comes over to say there is no more luggage to come off that plane, its all off, we've had abit of a mix up with luggage ("NO s***!" I was thinking) and if you go over to the baggage desk they will be able to tell you whats happened to it. So I rather angrily scurried off to the baggage desk ready to blow a fuse (Rach trying to trott behind with her nice shiny luggage that she HAD got!) and on the way another Qantas rep stops me to say before you get in the quaue go look over in the corner over there as 4 bags have just come in on another flight from Sydney and one of them might be yours!? so I stormed off over there and there it was in all its backpack glory. I was one of the lucky 4 out of about 50 to have their bag tossed in the corner!! i've never been so happy to see that bloody backpack!! SO after all the fuss we got together all our stuff and got a taxi to our hostel in Northbridge, Perth called Billabong Backpackers.
We have been here 5 days and what a five days they have been!! The whole five days has consisted of trying to find out how we are to get up the West Coast and in the cheapest possible way. Here are 4 plans for getting to Broome & Darwin we have has so far. Plan:
1. We were going to rent a Campervan from Wicked Campers from Perth to Broom for $2000 then a guided tour from Broome to Darwin for $800. Obviously this option was far too expensive so we knocked it on the head. So we set about finding a lift, which takes us to plan 2.....
2. A Man called Espin, 27 from Norway. We found him on the noticeboard in the hostel. So Rach gave him a ring and we met him to see what he and the van where like. He was nice and the vehicle was a 4x4 Mitsubishi Pajero 1986 Model. So we went for that. The next day he rings to say that the vehicle has packed up and he has taken it to the gargage atnd it is going to be $1000 to repair! So we knocked that one on the head. Although Im glad it happened now and not in the middle of nowhere! So we set about looking for plan 3.....
3. A Man called Maik, 26, from Germany. We found him on a website called Gumtree.com and again he was looking for two people to travel up- the coast with him to Broome and Maybe Darwin. So we called him and met him for a drink. He seemed nice and we all got on well so again we shook on the deal. When we got back after some discussion Rach & Myself both agreed that he was a total Bush Tucker, SAS, Living in the outdoors is great! type of person as he wants to camp every night in areas when you dont have to pay for it, basically in the middle of bloody nowhere with no showers of even a toilet! Now im at one with nature but I don't want to be in the middle of it every night!! He also just wants to live off just rice and beans!! Thats fine but let us not forget we are on holiday! so with all this in mind that takes me to Plan 4.....
4. On the way down from breakfast thismorning we walk past the notice board and see a sign for a vehicle for sale for $800. So we call the couple and arrange to meet with them. We take the vehicle for a spin and suprisingly it drives really smooth and well. Although Rach does need to sit in front of a pillow to reach the pedals. Its a Mitsubishi Sigma 1983 model. So well old but from what I have seen, drives pretty well and the interior seems in very good condition. (not that niether me or Rach know the first thing about Cars!) as long as it gets us to Broome I dont care. We said we would let the couple know our decision in an hour or so. We will obviously keep you updated too.
So with all our options in mind we have some thinking to do. We will keep you posted.
