Cusco was just what Dan and I had needed to get us excited about travelling again. Cusco is still a tourist mecca however the heart of the city has so much character and history. We stayed in San Blas; it is a hard walk to your hostel each day as the area is uphill and given Cusco is still high in altitude you can get very puffed. The streets are tiny and therefore the cars that you usually see driving in the area are matchbox cars, any other cars that drive through the area generally get big scratches as they are too big to fit around the corners. The streets are cobbled and the people are very friendly. There are a lot more people trying to sell you things on the streets than other cities we have been to and this can sometimes get annoying, although it is nothing compared to Asia.
I won't lie when I say the main thing that made Cusco capture our heart was its food. After coming from Bolivia where the food is very uninspiring we had finally got to a place where the restaurants offered a variety of tasty dishes. We ate at one restaurant the most called Jacks. I think the staff where beginning to wonder if we ever ate anywhere else. Cusco also has great shopping, there are many boutique stores offering all sorts of clothing made out of alpaca and gorgeous jewellery. The only problem is that these stores are very expensive i.e. a couple of hundred dollars for a necklace etc. hence we mainly did 'window shopping'.
We spent longer in Cusco than planned as Dan had a funny tummy still and I had a cold. We didn't want to book a trek until we knew we were both ok to go and hence spent a week there. All we did was eat and shop. Even though now we regret the amount of time we spent in Cusco, I feel that maybe it was what we needed.
