The Sulkantay trek was amazing. It is one of our favourite parts of the trip so far, along with the 5 day jeep tour. We were part of a group of 6 people and our group were the best group of all, in my opinion. We were so lucky to have met and trekked with individuals that were like minded in humour and personalities. I think we formed some true friendships and have promised to try and met again.
The trek is hard work considering you walk for an average of 8 hours per day over difficult terrain. The landscape is so incredible however and the fact that we worked hard to see it created a sense of achievement each day. Every now and again on our travels I really get taken by what I am seeing and experiencing…I had many moments on this trek of feeling so amazed and appreciative.
The first two days are mainly up hill, reaching the highest point of 4600 meters on the second day. These days were very cold and wet. On the second day we walked approximately 13 hours and walked through two completely different types of terrains; mountainous/cold to warm/thick in vegetation.
We slept in tents the first three nights and had limited bathroom facilities. By the end of the fourth day we had reached Aqua Calientes and were very appreciative of a hot shower and proper toilet. The fifth day we visited Machu Pichu which is truly amazing and climbed a very steep and rather dangerous mountain called Waynapichcu. I think the fact that we walked so far to reach this point again heightened the experience of being there. Denise and Daniel, a gorgeous couple from Venazula who were part of our group, got engaged at Machu Pichu which was very exciting and romantic.
