Copacabana is a hippy tourist mecca. Given that Copacabana is said to be the birthplace of the sun it attracts tourists who are seeking a spiritual journey. Dan and I looked out of place wearing shorts and t-shirts as the general look was long following skirts, dreadlocks and no shoes. Lots of the local people are lovely as well as some of the tourists however a large proportion of the tourists are what I call 'try hard hippies' as their look and general vibe appeared more forced than natural.
Copacabana is a good place to go to unwind and take things slow. The main street is lined with reggae bars and funky restaurants. Lake Titicaca sits at the end of the main road tempting you with its blue water, around the edge of the lake are hundreds of duck paddle boats and fish stalls. It is hard to believe that Lake Titicaca is not the sea given its enormity.
About a 4 hour boat ride from Copacabana is the Isla Del Sol. This is a tiny island that has a lot of character. We spent the night on the north side of the island which was an experience. Our hostel looked like a new construction site but it provided a great view of the lake. Sitting on the balcony we watched many locals walk their pigs, sheep and donkeys to the water to drink.
That afternoon we walked with a Canadian Couple to view the ruins of a town that pre-dates the Inca times. Walking around the ruins we ran into a few tourists that were praying or meditating. We also met a Sharma who for only 10 sols blessed us with water collected from a well that the Inca's believed was sacred and pure. The blessing was meant to have come from Pacha Mama, the earth goddess and to bring good luck in our lives. The tiny town has no electricity so at night time everyone walked around with torches and the restaurants were lit with candles.
The following day Dan and I did the four hour hike to the South side of the island. The walk had great views but the heat was high. We rested in the shade of some gumtrees which was comforting given that we were both home sick at this point.
The south side is more geared for tourists but is still very pretty. Given that Dan was sick with a tummy bug and that we both were feeling flat in our moods and badly sunburnt we decided to head back to Copacabana and leave for Peru earlier than planned. Bolivia was fantastic but it wore us thin and apart from the jungle we had not found a destination that inspired us since the jeep tour weeks before. It was time for a change and we both felt travelling to a new country would help lift our moods.
