What a day! Poor Dan had to drive the whole day as the car was a manual, leaving me unable to drive, and the others did not have their driver's licences with them; leaving poor Dan responsible for all the driving. He did a really good job and we only had to point out a couple of times that he was driving on the wrong side of the road ;)
The drive to Cafayate from Salta is incredibly beautiful and having our own car gave a greater sense of freedom. Argentina has such diverse landscapes. Smooth rolling hills in one section, ragged and jagged cliffs the next.
We had a really delicious lunch at a very pretty winery and finally were able to try some good quality Argentinian wines. We drove to two other wineries stopping occasionally for the lone donkey walking down the road.
I will admit that at one of the wineries we may have left with two of the glasses still in our grasp and so when driving pass a big hill overlooking a gorge we decided to climb up it and open one of the bottles we had purchased.
It was such a surreal feeling sitting on a big hill overlooking mountains so huge they make you feel like a tiny speck and watching horses drink from the river below; a special moment that will stay with us for a long time.
