There are two small towns that are situated either side of the Argentina/Bolivia border; La Quaca (Argentina) and Vilazon (Bolivia). We were told that it was best to stay in La Quaca overnight and cross the border to Bolivia in the morning.
There just happened to be a festival that week where local people sell and buy their own local handicrafts. It was here that we were first introduced to dried lama foetus. We now know that these foetuses are buried under the foundations of a newly built house as a good luck charm. They were hanging all about the market stalls and very creepy.
The following morning we left to cross the border into Bolivia. It was a 10 min walk and very simple process. What we weren't to know was that, elections were being held that day and all modes of transportation were not to be used until 8:30pm that night. Vilazon is a tiny town and tourists only go there as a means to get someone else. We were meant to catch a bus that morning but due to the election were stuck there until late at night. There were massive groups of tourist sitting in the town's square stuck with nothing to do. By night time there were hundreds of people waiting for the bus and we were really unsure about whether we would actually get on a bus that night at all. Fortunately we were one of the tourists that weren't scammed and our bus came not too long after its expected time. This was of huge relief given that it was freezing outside.
