Hello friends and family,
We are really enjoying ourselves in Buenos Aires but we need to leave soon as it is much more expensive than we thought and we need to keep to a tight budget. We have mainly been spending our days walking around this massive city. The people here are lovely and very friendly. We are however been very cautious particularly when walking through the poorer areas of the city. There are police everywhere though which is comforting.
The city is very diverse much of it has a European feel. Some buildings are beautiful and others are really ugly. There is heaps and heaps of graffiti and all the famous statues have big fences around them as many of them have been vandalized.
Yesterday we walked through San Telmo which is full of cobbled streets and aging buildings. We both loved this area of the city as it looked and felt more like the Argentina we had pictured before we came. I am in love with the little corner cafes that have much charm and character. It is very tempting to stop and have a drink at every one. There are tiny delis that sell smoked hams and delicious cheeses and around every corner is a little pastry shop. Pastries are big here and they are oh so yummy. The food again is very European, breakfast consists of pastries or baguettes and lunch/dinner consists of pizza, pasta, schnitzels and potatoes (every meal has potatoes or as they say papas). We have found a small local eatery that has become are favorite place to eat. I mentioned it in my last email. They sell all sorts of yummy meat with papas and the best sandwich I have ever eaten. In fact I ate one of the best pasta meals here, the best BBQ chicken sandwich and the best gelati all here.
We have been quite determine to eat where the locals eat and avoid the places that have lots of tourists. Last night we were in the back streets of the main city and found a pizza shop. The waiters did not speak English and we were the only tourists there. We were enjoying the moment of being immersed in the local culture and drinking local wine when Duck Sauce Barbra Streisand came on! It was so funny of the all the places to here that song who would have thought it would be there.
We walked to La Boca yesterday which is a suburb that is situated along side an old port and this is where many of the the working class locals live. It is famous for the colored houses and tango dancing. It was great to be able to see some free tango dancing.
Today we are off to the more affluent areas of Buenos Aires called Recoleta and Palermo. Palermo is famous for its nightlife and amazing bars.
Tomorrow we plan to catch a bus (15 hour trip) to Mendoza, where we will stay for awhile. So this morning after breakfast we need to look at booking the bus and the hostel. I doubt we will be able to use phones or computers there so we might be out of touch for awhile.
While there we will work out if we will continue to travel through Argentina up to Bolivia (this will take about two weeks) or go across to Chile and then catch a plane to La Paz. We are aware of the fighting occurring in Chile so will be careful and if need be not leave the airport.
Anyway thought I should flick you all a email as it might be the last for a little while. If I can I will keep in touch.
To the parents, we are having problems with our phones and plan to buy a new one today. We will let you know details when we get them. Sorry we cant give you more of a concrete itinerary but we really don't have much planned.
Love you all heaps.
Keep me posted about what is going on with you all.
P.S. girls can you please check with each other that you are all getting my emails...if anyone as not got them send me a email and then I will have your details stored.
Lots of love
Dan and Soph
