Sophie's Year in Namibia with Project Trust
The last few weeks have had a lot of ups and downs. I would like to thank everyone who emailed or facebooked me about the Burglary. It was really nice to know that I had so many people thinking of me. I will start will a negative and end on a positive. Possibly the best way, we don't want to finish on a lull. The Burglary was horrible and really scary. I mean I had so much of my stuff taken but the worst part of it all was the intrusion of space. For the next week each time I went into my room I knew that someone else had been there touching all of my stuff - messing up my room. However my volunteering partner and I got some great advice from some new friends that we met here. They basically said "Just look to the future, you're in Africa me'darlin'". This really gave me prospective about where I really was and what I was actually doing.
However even though I may have had quite a few deep moments after the burglary we still managed to have many days where our new friends managed to make us smile and think of the future. We have had some incredible days out though. Many of them without a camera at the time but I will definitely be going back there to be taking pictures. Luderitz and the barren earth around it is absolutely incredibly beautiful and it is so absolutely different to being in England. Sometimes being in the town you can get so lost in the work that we are doing however when leaving and going out into the desert that is when you actually feel part of Africa.
In the past few weeks we spent a lot of our time getting to know people, the town and ourselves. This has been an incredible journey already and it has only been 3 and a half weeks. Imagine what is still to come. It is weird that so many people see us and automatically know who we are. This I find really lovely in some ways as it means that they aren't afraid of introducing themselves to us as they know what we are going through and how past volunteers have felt. However whilst helping in the National Beach Clear Up Day (which turned into "Recycling promotion" for Luderitz) I found the loveliest peace of grass that was nicely kept and was so beautiful. I have taken a picture and attached it to the email. It is so intreguing to see how different people live. They live so close to us but they live in a metal shack with one maybe two rooms - and what is most interesting, they find us just as incredible and we find them.
We are now just finishing our first Buchter. The Buchter, for those of you that don't know, is the newspaper that Suzy and I will be writing each month about Luderitz. It will contain so many different stories about the interesting unique town of Luderitz that it would be madness for the Luderitz people to miss out on it. This months issue was really difficult as everything that we had was held on the laptop that is still to this very day stolen. This meant that we had to start this issue from scratch which we found really challenging but also meant that is really tested us so that the rest of the Buchters wouldn't go quite so badly! If you would like of a copy of the Buchter News to be sent to you then please let me know and I will let you know costs and more about the content of the newspaper. If you would just like to see it and maybe read a few of the articles then each month I will update our website with our articles. I will update the website by the end of next week allowing me time to re-organise the whole of the website. The website address is: www.buchternews.com. Enjoy.
Teaching at the school has been a real struggle some of the kids love to learn new things and others are at school to socialise with their friends and nothing more and you have to be really strict - which I am having to learn to be really quickly. It isn't something that comes naturally to me. However we have started a football club for some of the students where they can practice and improve their skills and just have fun but all the kids are so noisy that it takes quite a bit of effort to settle them down. I hold this club on Tuesdays and Thursdays and I am exhausted after each session - but they are so much fun to teach and really just want to play.
I would just like to thank again everyone who messaged me or spoke to me during my time of trouble of the past few weeks. It was something you never really think will happen to you up until about 5 minutes after it has happened. It took me a while to actually work out what had happend!!
