There was a whole street of guest houses just on a road off the bay's promenade in Halong City. It has a lovely view but was very smoggy when we were there. Most of the restaurants were hideously expensive along there apart from bamboo which played Western music very loud while you were trying to talk to your dinner buddies. One night we just opted to get junk from the supermarket and watch 'The Hunbchback of Notre Dame' and 'Jack' in our massive room. Ideal.
After the ferry ordeal, more bad experiences with Vietnamese followed. After trying on hats at a stall in the market we were shouted at not to touch anything again because we weren't going to buy it- fair enough... But then we turn around to find her cleaning everything we've touched and burning some paper and waving it whee we'd been as if to clean up after our bad auras!! Never experienced anything like that in my life. Seconds later I bumped into a woman, immediately said sorry as a natural reaction only for her to see I was [Western/white/not Vietnamese ] and whacked my arm so hard I had a bruise the next day.
There's a really cool restaurant/bar called Bamboo which is reasonably priced and plays chart music... Very loudly. It was someones birthday so they gave put cake and played the music extra loud- we really couldnt talk as we ate. Kelly and I ordered tuna salad because of the junk feast we'd had the night before but they were tiny and as we put our forks down we looked at each other and she asked 'Want to share a pizza?' 'I thought you'd never ask!'
