Six days ago I was offered a place at Camp Hemlocks to work as their sports and archery programme leader. The camp is a special needs camp based in Connecticut for both adults and children. After careful consideration I accepted - still have tons of doubts but that's just the worrier in me and I went with my sisters view of just go for it. With only 6 days to prepare for camp it is safe to say they have been hectic!
After some emotional goodbyes and over a 2hr drive down to Heathrow (thank you Brenden!) I arrived, backpack on and ready to check in.
Shortly after checking in I met a small group of people. All travelling on my flight but at different camps. It was clear then that everything I felt about leaving home for 3 months and going to a camp in America, knowing nobody or not knowing what to expect was felt by everyone. Our group soon grew as we passed through security smoothly meeting new people - though still nobody at my camp or anyone on a special needs camp still making the experience a little daunting!
A tuna baguette, salt and vinegar crisps and bottle of water later we made our way to the gate excited at the 7 and a half hour flight on a virgin flight with free food, drink and an abundance of new films!
As we were waiting to board it was clear Camp America were going to be filling a large section of the plane and they had conveniently sat us at the back of the plane! There I met someone on the same camp as me reassuring me completely! Like me, he knew very little of the camp or what to expect!
I'm now writing this on board the plane sat next to an empty seat (the flight is half empty!) and Joe who actually goes to Derby university - small world and wait the next stage of my adventure!
