After a lovely night sleeping in a bed in our little cabin we woke up early and had bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs and mushrooms for breakfast. Actually going to be coming home at least a stone heavier. We then set off on our long drive to New Orleans!
We stopped off at Jackson, Mississippi on the way down and got to see the Capitol building. Inside we saw a senate and House of Representatives which was really cool!
On our way further down south to New Orleans we went through a huge thunderstorm, warnings came on the radio and I've never seen lightning like it. Luckily the storm was travelling the other way so hopefully we will just have sunshine for the rest of the trek.
We also stopped off at a swamp where we did a swamp tour. We saw and fed alligators which was very cool!
We then arrived in New Orleans and checked into our hotel for two nights! It gave me a chance to unpack my whole rucksack and reorganise it! A few of us went to dinner and I had shrimp po boy. Apparently a New Orleans dish and it was really good!
The next day I got up and wondered around New Orleans. I went with a couple of people on the trek to cafe du monde and had the beignets - famous here and they were so yummy! I then explored the French quarters more looking round the strange markets and seeing the Mississippi River.
We met our guide leader back at the hotel and 1pm to say goodbye to those leaving the trek at this point and then we went to a voodoo museum. Very strange!!
It's safe to say that New Orleans is one of my least favourite places I have ever been. The amount of poverty and homelessness in the city is vast. Drinking is allowed on streets and bars are open all the time bringing some interesting sights that often made me feel uncomfortable. I'm sure it's a great place if you come here for the nightlife but for me as a tourist it isn't the place for me! So instead of going out for dinner that night Cate, Sarah and I grabbed a McDonald's and ate it in our hotel room making the most of the comfortable bed, enclosed bathrooms and TV!
I'm glad to be leaving New Orleans, our next stop, a long drive away is Houston!
