Rio de Janeiro, the city of god, a place that I was VERY excited to go to, and I have to be honest, I was slightly disappointed by it.. but I think that's only because I had such high expectations, because it is still a very cool city! There are some very cool things to see there, and we did most of them I think, spending A LOT of money in the process! Rio is very expensive!
Obviously we went to the famous beaches, Copacabana and Ipanema, which are nice beaches, although it strange to walk out from the massive high rise buildings and across the road be perfect mile long beaches! Also I discovered to my dismay that unlike the image of Rio that we are led to believe in England, hardly anyone wanders around in bikinis or trunks AND the vast majority of the population don't look like supermodels, in fact they aren't actually very attractive at all!
We went up the sugarloaf on the cable cars, the iconic mountain that features on all panoramas of Rio, and does have amazing views across the city and of course we also went up to see the statue of christ the redeemer which is also very large and cool, and made solidly of stone, not of metal like I thought!
The areas of Lapa and Santa Teresa are the sort of bohemian areas of the city. Lapa is good to go out at night, with a lot of bars and people just drinking out on the streets. It also has a cathredral that looks like a massive dalek! There's a famous staircase in Lapa which is very cool. A Chilean artist started to tile it one day and now its covered with thousands of different coloured tiles, and tiles from all around the world that people have sent him to add to it! Santa Teresa is up on a hill and has an all tramline running up to it, but we didn't take it as it has recently been closed because so many people kept falling from it and dying, especially tourists!
Ben and I had a bit of a fight and spent a few days apart, I went to stay with our friend Kasia that we met in Ilha Grande who was then in Rio too and hung out with her for a bit, but we're back together now and everything is good! :) Oh and we managed not to have any crime happen to us or get kidnapped, which is good as I've been told Rio is the most dangerous city in the world for tourists! (I'm not sure I believe that though, it seems like a dubious fact!)
