The final day of our epic walk!!! We had a leisurely start at the Halfway House, probably because none of us could face the shared squatter toilets (even if they offered the best view in the world! - see pic). Yummy breakfast of Naxi bread sarnies and pancakes and off on the third leg of the trek.
Today was a fairly easy day, all flat or downhill, in beautiful sunshine. We had to cross several waterfalls and crossed paths with a herd of goats, as well as watching a herd of ponies being herded down the cliff. The most dramatic moment of the day was Sam going flying, flat on her face and causing herself serious injury - a rather large dent in her pride.
As we descended, we could see the gushing river running through the gorge behind us and the snow capped peaks on either side. I for one struggled with the relentless downhill towards the end - my knees were shaking and my toes felt like they had been run over by a steam roller.
However, before long, we were safely at the Bridge Cafe for a celebratory beer and some lunch, sitting in the sun overlooking the Gorge. From there, it was only a short walk down the cliff to our final TLG hostelry. En route, we watched people tending their crops on the terraces and saw groups of men playing cards on their verandahs. From time to time, a minibus taxi would come zipping past, blaring its horn as if we had not noticed its approach.
The 'Chateau de Wood' (aka Woody's) boasts a beautiful garden and terrace overlooking the massive cliff that is the opposite side of the Gorge. We must have descended quite some way as it stayed warm here until well after the sun had dipped below the horizon. We played cards, chatted and ate yet more food, including some local speciality herbal bread which might have seemed less out of place on the menu in certain parts of the Netherlands.
Amusing moment of this evening was Sam trying to mime drying herself by wiggling her hips frenetically while waving her arms behind her back. Eventually our host said, in perfect English 'oh, you need a towel?'!!!!!!
We've all 'retired' early, tired now but proud of having walked what is described as one of the greatest hikes in the world.
