Some of us again sampled the local herbal bread for breakfast at 'Woody's'; this led to a rather hazy day. We were picked up, as arranged, at 10am to return to Lijiang. This involved two different minibuses and a succession of additional passengers who jumped in and out of our 'taxi' during the journey. The first part, back through Tiger Leaping Gorge, was not for the faint hearted; our driver zigzagged merrily across potholed roads liberally covered in boulders which had slid down from the cliff above. With a maybe thousand foot drop to our left.
Once down from the mountains, the rich tapestry of Yunnan life began to play out before our passing eyes: motorbikes and tractors with open trailers carrying wood, chickens and sometimes entire families; women with huge wicker baskets or babies strapped to their backs; yaks tethered by the roadside; dogs and mopeds weaving through the traffic. A thousand and one portraits waiting to be photographed.
Back in incense-scented Lijiang, we returned to the wonderful 'Heavenly Inn' for a much needed change of clothes, then we headed to a Szechuan restaurant for lunch. Our spicy feast, washed down with some beer in the sun, proved a little too much and we all crashed out for the rest of the afternoon!!
By the time we all came round, you've guessed it, it was time to eat again... this time a spicy hotpot amongst Chinese families out celebrating the Spring Festival. We then meandered through the colourful streets, lit by red Chinese lanterns for New Year and multi-coloured Indian cotton lanterns. Amazing how much warmer and busier it has become here in just four days!!!
