So I'm going to try and update this a little more regularly now(I say again). Have a computer at home that I can write on then transfer to the internet at work. So yea..i have a home here in little Lake Tekapo where I'm living and working until mid-september.I'm in a house with two other Canadian boys, Geoff (Brooksy) and Bryan (Northy) both from Toronto. Good guys and great hockey players. Our house is called '3 below average' which stems from a picture we took which I will try to post. We live on the same street as three other staff houses. Tekapo has less than 400 permanent residents but it does have a couple good night spots..if it's the weekend. One is the tavern which looks like part pub, part banquet hall. Pepes is a pizza restaurant that has a good vibe and can get bumpin into the night…for Tekapo.
I'm working here www.alpinesprings.co.nz , I work in the skate hire as well as coach kids hockey twice a week. Going to learn to drive the Zamboni! Every Canadian kids second dream. It's a pretty easy job, very chill place with good staff. I get to use the hot pools and get a free massage every month. Also play hockey twice a week and get a new set of gear to use.
Its getting to winter here and I have bought myself a whole new snowboard setup. Got a new jacket and pants in Queenstown and one of my bosses was able to hook me up with a brand new snowboard and bindings for only $250 NZ. All in I think Ive spent about 550 CDN for an entire brand new snowboard package from boots, jacket, pants, snowboard, bindings etc.., pretty sweet.Bought a mid-week season pass for 12 different mountains as well which was 500NZ. So I'm all set for the season. There are a few staff members who are keen to go as well so its good, especially in terms of getting transportation to the mountain.
Yesterday was one of my days off so Sandra from work and I borrowed a coworkers car and took a trip to the nearest "big city" which is Timaru. Visited the Pack N Save and got myself a kiwi drivers license as I forgot to renew my BC drivers license before I left home and it expires on my birthday. Also went up Mt.John where there is an observatory for the Uni.of Canterbury, and incredible views of the surrounding McKenzie basin and southern Alp mountains. Apparently Tekapo gets the darkest night sky in NZ so there are great views of the stars and milky way. Not as many stars as the northern hemisphere though.
So that's that for now. Had my doubts about coming to such a small place but it's beautiful, much like home.the people and the job are great…so I'm glad I'm here.
catch ya later.
