The route across the desert part two.
600 mile push from Yazd to Mashhad.
5am start. Huw leaves key in car door overnight. Straight drive into the heart of the desert. Stop in Tabas to avoid the 50degree heat. Not much to see in desert, striking mountains on either side, lots of trucks, signs for Asiatic Cheetah, camels, cows. 11am till 5pm. Locals can't believe it. A camel/kebab shop owner, Khaled buys us rose water ice cream for lunch.
Police patrol tries to give us the hard stare as they drive by us sat on the pavement but the driver is so excited to see tourists he gives us a wave and they all cave in and wave too. Brilliant, that's the beauty of this place. Lots of motorcyclists wearing bandages over eyes to cover them from the sand. Town shuts down from 1pm to 5pm because of heat so we can't do anything or buy anything.
We get our 6l of water and head off for the city of Mashad, the holy city of Iran and second only in the Muslim world to Mecca. Huw overfills radiator again. We shall see what happens.
Dusk driving is not much fun, or rather being a passenger writing this isn't actually. Finally get into Massad at midnight. In hotel by 1.30. Big sleep in an expensive Russiany hotel with the largest fridge you have ever seen in the room.Long driving days at the moment.
