Because we got in really late last night, a well needed lie in was taken advantage of. Another breakfast of naan, carrot jam and egg and tea was the mornings order. Ace. Quick wander off in the mornings sun to the Holy Shrine of Mashhad. A complex of shrines and courtyards that amaze and impress. I have to say if you are a follower of the Muslim faith you would want to pray here, it's awesome. Needless to say we are the only foreigners in the place so everyone makes a fuss of us. In a nice way.
Following the silk routes brings it home how the weary travellers must have travelled the deserts with their camels and then rested up at these amazing Muslim oasis's (sp). I wish I could time travel to see these places when they were the leading cities of the world. It's fascinating how we in the western world don't really get to see them in all this beauty. We feel very priveliged at this point as we are completely off the tourist trail and even off the Mongol Rally trail, i bet fewer than 10 cars maybe 5 even got to Masshhad.
Photos with guards and tickling sticks are a highlight.
Mashhad done. Off to the border. I think we need another country to hit!!
