On Thursday we took the train to Berlin and said goodbye to Oktoberfest. The first few nights we stayed at the dodgiest hostel we have been so far. We had a sixteen bed room to ourselves, and the receptionist kind of let on that no one really stays there. On Friday we had a big sleep in and tried to recover from our big week. We were feeling a bit sick so took it easy. On Saturday we spent the whole day doing washing at the coin laundry which looked like it had come straight out of a Lisa Mitchell clip, and after finding three euro bottles of spirits decided to go out! it was a fun night and we met a few people out, however when we returned at four in the morning we found that there was an underground rave going on underneath our hostel. The bouncer got us in for free so we went down for a look. It was amazing down there it had three different levels with different types of music playing on each level, hard to believe that all of this was going on underneath our dirty hostel. We got woken up by the cleaners the next day at twelve who yelled at us that we had to check out. Our next hostel we were encountered with a very strange man who ran the hostel called Martin. We got yelled at five times before we had completed the check in. Once for messing up 24 hour time and selecting 2am instead of 2pm, again for being over an hour late for that time anyway, again for placing the bags 30cm away from where he had specified, and again for "making his job very difficult" by asking to check out a day earlier than we had specified. We nearly burst out laughing when he yelled at us to be quiet when he was calculating how much we had to pay. He then gave us the tour of the very small hostel, the computer ("where you can charge your tamagotchis") the monkey who took care of the bar fridge ("no monkey business!) and the hallway, where he burst in on another room who were laughing "are you dying?!!!!" then slammed the door and finally showed us our room where we fell asleep until the next day.
On Monday we had intended to go on a walking tour of the city but got distracted and ended up going to the Berlin zoo! It was really great and had a lot more animals then the Perth zoo, but didn't seem as friendly to the animals, as the enclosures were created more open so people could see them but they were quite different from the animals natural environment. That night we decided to have a few quiet beers with our instant pasta dinners but this somehow evolved into playing drinking games with the rest of the people staying at the hostel.
On Tuesday we went on a free walking tour of the city which was really amazing, the lady who ran it made itreally interesting and it went for over five hours. We saw the holocaust memorial, checkpoint Charlie, the Berlin wall and lots of other beautiful churches and museums which had only just been restored after the war. We got the full history of what had happened in the historical history it was very interesting! That night we had more drinks with the people at the hostel, it ended up being quite a late night and we were all up talking to nearly seven that morning. For Wednesday we hadn't booked any accommodation as we had such an early flight to Amsterdam the next morning we were going to sleep at the airport. Martin did however let us leave our bags at the hostel so we hanged around there most of the day and lounged around in the park with one of the people from the hostel. Everyone was planning on going out that night, and against our better judgement we decided to go with them, after all our flight didn't leave until seven the next morning. The night ended up getting a bit crazy and we ended up getting back to the hostel at four, just in time to run in and grab our bags and then jump on the taxi to the airport. We checked in, got through security and immediately fell asleep in the airport lounge. We woke up at five to seven, frantically ran to the gate only to find we had missed our flight! Much more drama ensued, but we were lucky enough to find another flight eight hours later.
