On the first day back from Sydney, we went off to the MCG for a stadium tour and a look around the museum. The tour was very interesting, though the guide I felt only gave the information required, nothing more and nothing less - which is both good and bad I suppose. I'm not sure what to think about the MCG - it is clearly a very important cricket ground, but for 6 months of the year it is used for Australian Football, meaning the pitch is very sandy. After the tour we went to the museum within the stadium, and it was by far the best museum I have ever been to. It had 'hands-on' activities, Australian Football kicking, cricket throwing, football penalties, cycling, etc. As well as the activities, the actual museum was very interesting, with Aussie Rules stuff, Olympic and Commonwealth stuff, and most importantly, Cricket stuff. They had a very interesting and interactive hologram "show" from Shane Warne, loads of old bats and pads and balls, and just other very interesting items. After the MCG, we drove down to the coast, had fish (shark) and chips and then did some exploring and saw an Ferrari 458 Italia and a white Lamborghini Aventador. After exploring the suburbs surrounding the harbour area, we headed back into central Melbourne and wandered down the Yarra river, got some food, and then headed back to Jane's. Now sorting stuff out for a trip to the Grampians and Great Ocean Road over the next few days!
We got up early again on Friday to drop Hunter at the train station before driving towards the Grampians. We arrived around lunch time, so after taking some photos of kangaroos and having some lunch, Jane and I began a walk up to the pinnacle. 5 hours later we finished, just as it was getting dark… it had taken longer than expected! The walk was only 10km, but it was up and down, and up and down the whole way. We ate at a lovely little café / restaurant before heading back to the rooms to crash. And… on the TV, Escape to the Country in Canterbury was on! The weather the next day turned bad, all night and in the morning with torrential rain and winds, so we decided to get going towards the Great Ocean Road. The further we travelled, the clearer the weather got, and by the time we got to the coast the weather was lovely. We took our time driving along the road, with some amazing views. We stopped off at one of Jane's friends who live along the road, and then when we got back to Melbourne, met up with another one of her friends who we went to have our evening meal with at an Italian restaurant that I believe has been there and hasn't changed for years.
Today (Sunday) was my last day in Melbourne, and we didn't do much at all. After a very late start, we met Jane's friend (the one we ate with the day before) again, and had lunch at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club where Jane's friend is a member. I had a very tasty Gnocchi in the amazing setting of the tennis club after a quick tour of all the facilities. The weather has been diabolical again today, so after lunch Jane and I drove around the F1 track and around the city for a bit, though it was too wet to get out. Just back at Jane's now, starting to pack and get my things together for my flight tomorrow.
