Ben & Sara's Trip
Hey Guys,
It's been a while since the last update and so I figured it would be better to split it into two parts again so here's the first one which covers our sailing and the trip to Cairns.
Our sailing trip started at 3.45pm on Friday afternoon and we had to walk down to the Marina to meet the Tallarook boat "Freedom". Our first sight of the boast was far from what we were expecting and what we had been told in the travel agents but for the price we paid there wasn't too much more we could expect!! The dorm layout was pretty basic with us having a double bunk above another double bunk and next to a single bunk! The crew didn't seem to have a great deal of a clue what they were doing, our skipper had been sailing boats for a week and a half having previously skippered barges in Darwin!! The only crew with any clue was a 15 year old cabin boy! On Friday night we sailed from Airlie Beach to our first bay where we dropped anchor and ate. The food was awesome and that night we chatted to a few people on our boat.
Saturday morning we left the bay early doors and sailed to Whitehaven Beach where we were dropped off and left for 2.5 hours. The beach was beautiful but not what I was expecting and due to the weather we were all bored so a game of beach football ensued for an hour or so!! Just before we were due to leave Sara, David and I walked up to the lookout to get a birds eye view of the beach. It was then we realised we'd been sent t Betty's Beach and not Whitehaven at all, the lying devils. That afternoon we went round to Blue Pearl Bay where we were due to scuba dive, they told me I couldn't cos of my asthma which was gutting as it's been something I've always dreamed about. David and Sara both chose not to dive because they didn't trust the equipment, David's a certified diver and his Dad holds the Czech record for depth diving or something so he knew what he was on about! We decided to go snorkelling and it was still absolutely amazing, the fact that this beautiful vibrant world exists just a metre below the surface is pretty incredible and it was definitely a highlight of the trip. That evening we moved to another bay for the night and had another beautiful meal. We spent the evening chatting underneath the stars and watching the school sharks and mackerel eating the little fish. At about 10pm the battery died and the power went out cos our "skipper" had forgotten to charge the battery, in between beers he managed to fix it after about 2.5hrs and telling the lads to go to the toilet off the side of the boat!!
The next morning we were dropped off at the beach for more snorkelling while the captain, cook and divemaster all went for a 45 minute dive leaving just the 15 year old to look after the 20 customers!! The fish life here was even better than the day before, with the highlight being a 3ft Maori Wrasse which was cool, the coral was not as diverse as yesterday though. After that we sailed back into Airlie Beach and were all pretty glad to be back on dry land!! Sunday evening we spent in the bar at the hostel we had stayed in the nights before the sailing and we met up again with Eamon and Lee-Anne from Fraser Island which was brilliant. The five of us spent a few hours in the bar and then it was time for us and David to get our coach to Cairns. Once again we had people waving us off at the bus stop which was quite cool!!
Once we arrived in Cairns at 6.30am the next morning we headed to our hostel and crashed out for the day. At about 4pm we got up and walked into Cairns to book our day trip to Cape Tribulation and our sky dive for tomorrow morning, I was already worrying!! We then just headed back to the hostel and spent some time in the bar with David before getting an early night.
I woke up at 7.20am the next morning riddled with nerves and kind of glad that it was raining cos it might save me!! By 11.30 it still hadn't cleared up so instead of wasting a whole day waiting we headed to Kuranda for the afternoon with David. I'd been spared the skydive for a few days as we rebooked it for later in the week!! Kuranda was really nice and also really cheap which was more important!! We spent the afternoon walking through the rainforest and then got the bus back to Cairns.
I'll add another update now as well but split it up cos I know how much abuse I'm getting for these long entries!!
