Ben & Sara's Trip
Hey,
So now just got to get up to dater from the last week! Last Wednesday we headed up to Cape Tribulation which is a couple of hours north of Cairns. We got picked up at 7am and headed up to the Daintree River for a crocodile cruise where we saw 2 female crocs, a couple of pythons, tree snakes and loads of birdlife. From there we went across the river and into Cape Tribulation Forest. The rainforest was really beautiful and Sara spotted a Cassowary which is an Emu like bird, very endangered and there are only 57 in that part of Oz!! She was feeling really lucky, probably less so a couple of days later when the Greyhound bus we wetre on almost ran one over!! We had lunch at this secluded spot and saw eels and turtles in the stream next to it. We then did a rainforest walk before heading down to Mossman Gorge and then back to Cairns.
The next day we were up and out of the hostel at 9.30am and had to say our final farewells to David after spending the last fortnight travelling with him, definitely someone we will make the effort to keep in touch with. The next leg of our journey was from Cairns to Mission Beach which was really nice but the weather was really bad. It was also the place where we saw the most damage caused by the cyclone that hit a couple of months ago. That afternoon we had to stay in cos of the rain, the dreaded skydive the next morning!!
We were up early and got picked up at 7.30am by this nutcase from the skydive company. We were driven to the office and found ourselves filling in yet another death disclaimer form before having to wait for a coupel of hours cos we were in Load 2. When our turn came we had to drive out to Tully Airfield and all of a sudden my nerves had disappeared and I was really laid back. When we got to the airfield we went through our instructions (ll of 2 minutes) and then went out to the plane. The plane was big enough for 10 people and me and Sara were side by side with our tandem masters behind us. Even in the plane I wasn't nervous, just enjoying the view from the plane. When we got to 14,000ft we were moved to the door and it was a 3-2-1 jump! The feeling as we left the plane was amazing and I was absolutely loving it, Sara saus she felt the same. The freefall was incredible and didn't seem to last long at all. There was cloud cover at 5,500ft so there was a ground rush as I saw it coming and in the cloud the parachute went up which was surreal. After coming out of the cloud we began our glide down to the beach landing. The view from the sky was amazing and I'm just so glad that I didn't bottle it. Once we were on the ground we watched our videos and were both smiling deliriously all the way to Townsville that afternoon!!
Once in Townsville we booked into a motel and had an early night exhausted from the days excitement! Saturday morning we decided that we would go to Magnetic Island for the weekend so we got the ferry across the water and got settled into a hostel in Horseshoe Bay. That afternoon we lazed around the beach and I bumped into a lad I'd met in Mission Beach who was from Dickens Heath. He knew Linz's boss at Weatherspoon's Sully and his wife knew a bloke who'd interviewed me at Severn Trent, it's a small world!!
The next morning we were up at 1.55am to watch the heartbreak of England crashing out of the World Cup, I spent most of the 1st half stood on a chair trying to get a decent signal to watch it on! We headed abck to bed and got up again at 7am to go Horseriding cos Sara wanted to do it. I won't lie, I hate horses and they don't like me particularly!! My horse was called Candy and was more interested in eating than running or doing as she was told, I thought that was quite apt!! After about an hour I could hardly see anything cos of my allergy to animal hair, proving that mother does know best as always!! Sara however had a great time and we have photo's of her stood on teh horse bareback in the sea!! She got to jump stage when she was a child don't you know! After that we headed back across to Townsville in preparation for our trip to Alice Springs.
The follwing morning we were out of the hostel at 6.30am and headed to the bus terminal for our 26hr bus trip. It was pretty boring and we finally arrived in Alice Springs at 9am this morning. This afternoon we booked our trip to Ayers Rock and walked around Alice Springs.
Hope you are all well and sorry for boring you but just think there'll only be a few more of these cos we'll be back before you know it!!
Lots of Love
Ben and Sara xx
