Today we're talking about San Sebastian in the Basque country on the northeast coast of Spain. It has the lot: beautiful beaches, interesting architecture, great fashion and shopping, but the highlight here has definitely been the tapas (otherwise known as pinxtos - they have their own language here by the way; and just when were getting used to Spanish! [not]). The best places were found in the old town. Our favourites were, but not limited to, Iberian ham, mushroom, fresh anchovies and tuna. Not all on the one piece of bread of course. But there were so many combinations we just kept going back for more! All of these washed down with 1 Euro beers or wine. We also stumbled across a fantastic place that was just full of locals enjoying themselves, a real mixed bag of older folk, teenage friends and whole families. Great vibe and incredible food.
We did more here than just eat by the way. We spent a gorgeous day lazing on La Concha beach. We also hiked up to a lookout with amazing views. And we spent a day in the city of Bilbao which is about and hour west of San Sebastian. That place would probably be most famous for having a Guggenheim museum which we also enjoyed. There was a very interesting exhibition there by Anish Kapoor which included a real canon that shot out red wax on to the wall! Kapoor is also showcasing some work with mirrors in Kensington Gardens if you find yourself there one day. Argh, we miss London!
We dropped our car in Toulese and said goodbye to Europe (for now anyway) and hopped on a plane to Morocco for the last week of our adventure. Sad and excited all at once!
