The Island of Koh Tao.
So after boarding our ferry at the pier in Koh Samui, up comes the Anker and of we go to Koh Tao. It’s another red hot day and when we arrive at the pier in Koh Tao there are two ferry’s unloading.. Well Christ what a nightmare, we are standing there like a bunch of animals being herded into their cage ha-ha, with 19kg on my back and another day pack attached to the front of me...about to topple over, horrible. So after fighting our way through we finally arrive at our pickup truck and I fling off the rucksack...my back is so sore. We hop onto the back of our truck and set off to the seashell resort. When we arrive we get our rooms sorted and guess what...I get a room to myself this time, yipppeee!! The beach is literally a two minute walk from our bungalows and what a beautiful beach it is...sand is soft and white. I got a laugh when I got to the door of my bungalow and seen the sign on the door reading, no hoes please... someone had ripped of the ‘s’ on the word shoe, very funny! The rest of the afternoon we just chilled out on the beach and done a bit of swimming in the sea. Nice and chilled out. We arrange to go and do the snorkelling trip the following morning, it looks pretty awesome. Once we have finished getting ready later in the night we head out to the restaurant at the seashell resort, it’s a BBQ here for dinner and it is out of this world, yum yum. After dinner and a beautiful pina colada out of a coconut we head out into town, and when I say town, bear in mind that this is a remote island so it’s not very large haha. We start of at a bar called choppers where there is a live band on, they guys in the band are lovely, one is from back home and the other is Australian. Choppers bar has special offer, two buckets for the price of one, so in we go, shoes left at the door and order up s*** loads of buckets...the place is getting packed out, the buckets are coming and going, we have oasis, Galway girl, the freaking script playing lol, we have lots of music and it’s buzzing. Everyone is up on the tables in their bare feet dancing away hopping from table to table...BRILLIANT. Once we have finished up at choppers we head onto the lotus bar which sits right down on the beach, we order up more cocktails and everyone is down in the water, its brilliant craic. Miss Lorna also decided to take a swim out to the longboats as well haha crazy girl. Everyone kept disappearing one by one and in the end it was only me and Michelle left, until I went to the bar that is and then returned to find out she was also gone...and I was on my own . I went looking for my shoes and then discovered that my sandals were gone... so I am standing bare foot without my shoes and on my own and was just about to go home when I met the guys from the band in choppers haha, they told me to head on with them lot to a place called the cave, which believe it or not, is in the middle of a cave. So on I went, in my bare feet to a nightclub in a middle of a cave... Christ all mighty, if only my mum could see me now ha-ha or maybe not... eeeekkk. I arrived back home at 7am with a pancake in hand and found Michelle on her porch shouting at me to go skinny dipping, we should be locked up lol. So About one hour sleep and BANG BANG BANG, “Sinead, wake up, time to go on the snorkelling trip”, this is not happening to me. I tried to ignore them, but they wouldn’t go away ha-ha. So I opened my door, put on my bikini, shorts and top and headed on, make-up and sparkling eye shadow still on... They told me the fish would be attracted to it. Word of advice; never go on a boat trip when you have had no sleep and way too many pina coladas the night before, the boat rocks way too much...boke.com!! I was very glad that I did go on the trip though, it was amazing, we snorkelled amongst amazing coral, multi coloured fish, including Nemo, and amongst baby sharks. We stopped off at around five different places and also had lunch onboard as well. The highlight of the trip was definitely stopping off on the private island of Koh Nangyuan. You have to pay a fee of 100BHT to step onto the island but it is out of this world, it’s so small and the sand is out of this world, its paradise. When we arrive back to Koh Tao we go to watch the sunset on the beach with a Singh in hand, ahhh the life. For dinner tonight we get a BBQ again, they are so yummy, and again we head out into town. This time we head down to Lotus bar on the beach and get some gin and tonics ha-ha, we watch the fire dancers on the beach, and it’s pretty amazing. After Lotus and being chatted up by some freaky Italian guy who told me he took a picture of me on the beach today (long story) we decided let’s move on, and where better to go than the castle, another weird and wonderful nightclub in the little island of Koh Tao. It is actually in a shape of a castle, so weird, and yea, that night was pretty eventful but we won’t talk about that.....
The next morning is the last day in Koh Tao and unfortunately the last day that we will spend together. We don’t do very much apart from chill out on the beach and grab some lunch and do a bit of shopping. At lunch we all arrange with our guide to meet at the reception later and make our way up to sunset restaurant. So we all get the best gear on for tonight, Make-up and hair: check, Beautiful dress: check, ha-ha. We meet at reception and hop on the back of the truck which takes us up this very steep hill until we arrive at the top at this beautiful little restaurant which overlooks the island and the ocean. The sun sets over the ocean and we watch it go down with a Chang in hand. We order up some fantastic food and as we eat its dark and there is a lightning storm, but it’s so weird, there is no sound, no rain, just clouds being lit up purple, red and orange, flashes covering the sky in the distance, so surreal. So seeing it’s our last night, we hit town with a bang. We head down to Lotus where we watch the fire dancers again. Got talking to some cool people, two young guys from Canada, they were really nice. Also got talking to one of the guys who was doing the fire dancing, he’s a lovely guy, he’s called Chad and he is originally from Bangkok but lives on Koh Tao now, he took me for a drive on the back of his scooter, very hilarious. I ended up going for a drink with him in another bar further up from Lotus, on the back of a scooter with my maxi dress on, blocked, with a Thai local, they will be memories forever.
Sooooo another late night and more hangovers in the morning, but it’s a sad day, we have to say goodbye to James, Si, Richard, Simon and Richard today and the rest of us head on back to Bangkok where we spend the night in the big bad city before heading our separate ways... goodbyes are not good, we have all became close friends since being on this trip and have already planned our reunion in Dublin next August...can’t wait till’ then guys =)
And so it’s here that I will finish my blog on Thailand, I have had an amazing experience from the word go, I have fell in love with this country and its people and I will most definitely return. To the people I have met through my trip in Thailand, they have made my experience 10x better. I have made good friends and have soooo many good memories that I will never forget.
