I was still being sick when I woke up, so I went back to bed, was woken at 1pm and sick again.I managed to miss all my lectures for the entire day.It was like my uni days relived.Luckily all I missed was a Mandarin lesson, Tai Chi and Calligraphy. And there were no exams!!
A few of us then decided to make the most of our afternoon as the morning had been a write-off.We hailed a taxi and showed him a map, but he looked a bit aggressive and started to gesture for us to get out.We think we may have been kicked out of the taxi because of the map.
We finally got a taxi to take us to the Forbidden City.It was another one of those places where you've seen all there is to see after about five minutes because all of the buildings look the same.I occupied myself by looking for the funniest signs around the place. There are a few in my photos!
We had a late lunch at a restaurant advertising it had an English menu. This meant it had Chinese food with a menu written in English.I was still feeling hung-over so I went for the plainest thing I could- it was a bit like a salad with a variety of chopped vegetables like cucumber and red pepper, with a soy bean dip.It was really nice but quite an experience eating salad veg such as chopped lettuce with chop sticks. The waiters in the restaurant didn't speak much English but they were really friendly and wanted to try speaking English with us and taking photos sat with us.
After we had finished taking photos with the waiters, we walked to the park opposite the Forbidden City.We climbed lots and lots of steps, and then got to the top of the structure in the park to see the sunset over Beijing. It was really lovely and peaceful up there but there were a lot of other people there to take photos, apparently it is a well-known spot, and many of them had set up tripods so they could take the best shots of the horizon.
We climbed back down and then tried to find a taxi, but all the taxis driving past were occupied.Eventually a vacant taxi drove by and we were surprised to discover it had a Female taxi driver. She was actually the best driver I've had in Asia… and I'm not just saying that because she was a woman!I usually find in the taxis and cars in Asia I am clinging on to the arm rest, worrying about not having a seatbelt, eager for the journey to be over as we weave in and out of other cars, bikes, people and animals. But I felt quite relaxed… hmm maybe I'm just getting used to it!
Back at the hotel it was time to pack my bag again- the third time in a week.I am very much looking forward to getting to Liaocheng tomorrow so I can see my new home and at last unpack and stay unpacked. When I was done packing I went to the bar with the others but could not face any more alcohol after last night.I stayed out until I had drunk as much Iced Tea as I could handle, and then went back to the hotel to bed.
