We had an orientation tour ofThe University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) and it finished sooner than was scheduled so a group of us went to theLama Temple- or Yonghegong. We had to walk through lots of small buildings to get right to the back where there was a giant Buddha. It was quite interesting but to be honest after the first small building, they all began to look the same.
We went back for a lecture which basically explained a bit more about the programme. They still weren't able to tell us when we would be told our placements.
In the evening we had a Welcome Dinner in traditional Chinese style.About 10 people sat around the table with a glass lazy Suzanne in the middle.Lots of plates and bowls are put on the lazy Suzanne (I should find out what it is called in China!) and then everyone just helps themselves with chopsticks.Anyone who has a problem with 'double dipping' would certainly not enjoy this as you use your chopsticks to pick food off different plates and eat it, or dip it in the sauces as many times as you want, and then use your same chopsticks to pick up the next bit of food and so on.Not the most hygienic eating practice- it's no wonder so many people were catching the 'Beijing throat' from at the hotel! There wasn't much veggie choice but what I did have to eat was quite nice. The main dish was duck, and on the plate of sliced meat there lay the head of the duck, with eyeball and beak included.Every time the lazy Suzanne was spun, the duck head whizzed past.Yum.
After dinner a group of us went to Tiananmen Square to see it lit up in the dark.Just as we began taking photos, all the lights went off which kind of spoilt the photo opportunity so we went back to our hotel. When we got back the placements had been put up on the board.I've got a Kindergarten school in Liaocheng city in Shandong province.I looking in my Lonely Planet, there is some info on the province but nothing at all on the city.I also did a quick Google but there wasn't much there either.I guess I'll just have to wait and see for myself!
