Hi Guys
So, I left Sydney last Thursday. Lex was on a flight to Melbourne an hour before me so we got to the airport mega early and chilled out in a bar.Got to my gate and they said the flight was delayed for an hour, so I headed to the bar and enjoyed another vino. Got chatting to some old Aussie guy and he bought me another. I headed back to the gate half an hour before the flight time only to be told the flight had left without me and my bag had been removed!! Apparently they called my name out over the mega phone like five times but I swear I would have noticed if my name had been called out!
Anyway close to tears I made my way back up to the Virgin Blue desk and had to pay out $200 for a new ticket and claim my bag.I sat there listening to sad songs on my ipod feeling sorry for myself!! I only have myself to blame though I suppose, I should have stayed in the departure lounge - lesson learnt!! Luckily there was another flight an hour later, the flight was fine, but the heat when I got outside the airport was shocking!. Even at 7pm it was boiling hot! The temperature in Adelaide whilst I was there was 43!! Too hot man!!I arrived at my hostel after being ripped off by a taxi driver who blatantly took me the long way round but eventually something went my way and my room mate Anenka from the Netherlands was lovely. In addition there were no bunk beds!! Hurray!! You would not believe the amount of injuries I have sustained over the past two months due to bloody bunk beds!! They're lethal!! The town I was staying in - Glenelg was also very cute, it reminded me a lot of Christchurch so that was nice.
Anyway Anneka and I bought a bottle of vodka and sat drinking in the garden area of the hostel where we met three Aussie guys who were well funny!! Before we knew it, it was 2am and we all fancied some munchies so we headed out only to find everything but a little shop open. We grabbed some frozen pizzas & chips, my favourite aussie biscuits (I did a whole packet the other night!!) and some giant Crunchie Bars!! Unfortunately we burnt one pizza and we got so bored or waiting for the chips to cook we ate them half done!! But it did the job!! Got to bed about 3am and awoke the next day to a sore head!
Had breakie with the boys and a quick power nap before heading off into Adelaide on the tram.I did a three hour city walk, using a little map and a list of sights!I was very proud of myself for managing to find most of them, all on my own too, I refused to ask for help!!I'm such a saddo, I even ticked each item I'd seen off the list once I'd been there!! Back on the tram to Glenelg and I hit the beach, it was only a five minute walk from my hostel. Stayed down there until 7pm and then had a couple of farewell drinks with the guys.I really liked Adelaide and would have liked an extra couple of days there.
The next day I had to get up at 5.30am and be ready for 6 for my three day tour to Melbourne. The tour guide - JP was gorgeous and very funny. Over the course of the next three days I developed a huge crush on him!!
Anyway as we picked up more and more people I was becoming increasingly worried that I wasn't going to have a really good mate on this tour that I could hang out with.I need not have worried as after lunch when we got to MacKenzie Falls I got chatting to Sarah, Sally & Gary (three brits) who were totally on my wave length!! We had a right giggle and from them on were known as Team Britain!! Turns out they had been thinking the same thing, looking round the bus that morning at all the sour faces and Germans!
That night we stayed in the Grampians National Park, in a hostel. We had a barbeque and I shared a box of goon with a Swiss couple.Sarah & I got the munchies so we raided JP's food box and found some cookies which we ate whilst hiding in the computer room. Went to bed about 12, it was sooo hot in our room. 12 people and no air conditioning. I was literally putting baby wipes all over my body trying to cool myself down!!!
The next day we left at 8am and went on a 4km walk to see the Grampians. Now 4km doesn't sound that hard but trust me it bloody was!! It was very steep and very hot and team Britain were at the back for most of the walk but to be fair we were having a good old giggle!!
When we finally got to the top it was well worth it, the view was amazing. The walk down was a lot easier and afterwards we went to the Brambuk Aboriginal Cultural Centre. We stopped for lunch and I played some footie with the boys! Then we made our way south to the Great Ocean Road and saw the Bay of Martyrs, London Bridge & Loch Ard Gorge.
We stayed at a beach home in Port Campbell & whilst waiting for dinner Sarah and I began on a box of Rose goon!! We went to see the sunset at the Twelve Apostles (by this time we were rather jolly and gave the entire bus a rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody!) Fed up of our boring group, team Britain decided to hit the local pub once we got back to Port Campbell. I don't think it knew what had hit it when we arrived. It was so quiet in there!! We were straight on the juke box putting on loads of random tunes including 'lets talk about sex baby!' and a few red wines and ciders later and we were hammered! Went back to the hostel and demolished a tube of Pringles before calling it a night!!!
The next day I got up really early and just threw on some clothes so I could eat as much breakfast as possible to ease the hangover! I was stood chatting to JP and afterwards I realized I had dried up dribble on my face!! How embarrassing!!
Anyway, at 8am we went back to the Twelve Apostles, took a walk down Gibon's Steps and walked through a temperate rainforest at Otway National Park. After fish and chips for lunch we began our journey along the Great Ocean Road. It was absolutely beautiful; I admired the scenery for the whole two hours and couldn't believe that most of the group was asleep on what was the highlight of the trip!! We stopped at Bell's Beach (in the film Point Break) and in Torquay before arriving in Melbourne at 7pm. I had 20 minutes to get showered and ready for Neighbours Night, will tell you about that in the Melbourne blog though as this is long enough already!!
Take it easy peeps, lots of love, Shell xXx
