Up early for a tour of Quito today.
Paola took us around the Old Town, which is the most beautiful part of the city. We visited The Basilica, climbing right up to the highest tower. The view of the city is immense- it's surrounded by mountains & active volcanoes. Apparently there was a tiny eruption a few months ago that produced a mushroom shaped cloud of ask. Would have loved to have seen that!
La Plaza Del Grande was the next stop. This features all the governmental building. Paola gave us some history on Ecuador- about its freedom from Spain and about the population and communities.
After Lunch it was time to head to Camp Maqui- the location of the project, situated in the Cloud Reserve.
The journey itself was breathtaking- we took in lush green scenery and passed some cute little villages. It's obvious why it's named the Cloud Forest. We were literally amongst the clouds!
When we arrived at Camp Maqui all the other volunteers greeted us, along with our cook- Marianella.
The place we're staying is amazing, much better than I expected. Not only are there working toilets, a fully functional kitchen, but there's a washing machine, hammocks, foosball table and proper beds! I was expecting a shack! The place sleeps over 20 volunteers in 4 bedrooms, with separate rooms for girls/guys. All bedding is provided, along with mosquito nets. It really is a home from home.
