This morning Jessica's alarm did not go off so we woke up with 15 minutes to get ready before meeting the group - mad dash!
We drove back to Luoyang and took a 2 hour high speed train to Xi'an which was very nice and modern.
In the afternoon we went for an orientation walk around the city - we saw the ancient walls of the Tang Dynasty; in those days every city in China was surrounded by a wall, all have been knocked down except the one in Xi'an so it's quite a special landmark. We then visited the Bell Tower in the heart of the inner city. The bell was rang each morning to notify people that the gates of the city wall were open. Inside we were treated to a performance of songs played by bells and other instruments. After we took a short walk to the Drum Tower - the drum was beat every evening to notify people that the gates of the city wall were closing. Each tower had beautifully painted ceilings with good views of the city.
As it was Allison's birthday today - a group member, we went to a dumpling banquet in the evening - I didn't eat as most of the dumplings contained meat although the girls did let me try some of the veggie ones. I was happy enough with a Chinese beer.
After we made our way to Bar Street which reminded me of a European party city with the PR's outside each bar except it was a much prettier version with cool lights, even in the trees! We chose a bar where we were entertained by a number of bands and after a couple more beers retired back to the hotel.
