July 19th- 20th I had the most fun I've ever had!! The Boryeong Mud Festival!!
보령 머드축제 Bo ryeong Mo duh Chuk jae
A group of us decided to head to Boryeong on the East coast for the weekend and attend the annual mud festival! If any of you ever come to Korea- come in July just to go to the Mud festival!! We had booked a korean stye room to fit 30 koreans- there were 14 of us englishee teachers, Korean style is sleeping on the wooden floor on a thin blanket. Luckily we got a huge discount so it only cost us £10 each for the night! ASSAA! We made the 2 hour train journey and were sadly met by dark clouds (we were told to expect a typhoon) although our opinion was that if it rained it would just make it more fun! We quickly got changed and headed to the beach and reached the 1st dose of mud activities- tables with bowls of mud and paint brushes! Get painting your mates! What a giggle! There was also a big inflatable thing filled with mud so you could mud wrestle or just roll about hahaha! We decided to play mud volleyball keepie uppies! I landed face first! hahaha! Then there was an inflatable assault course- amazing fun! Was like a scene out of that Takeshi's Castle! SO mudded up we headed further along to the main stage to the main events where there were some strangee korean groups singing and dancing too. People were queing up for everything- mud wrestling, mud bath, octopus mud pool and the mud games. We headed for some beer 1st then hit the Mud prison to get freshly muddified since we were starting to dry up in the heat! Wierd feeling!! I was cracking! However that was all about to change as we decided to queue for the mud games as the heavens opened like I've never seen before! Made the games more fun tho hahaha! We had to all hold hands and run in a circle inside the inflatable arena then the girl would shout "make a team of 4" etc etc if you were left out you had to sit in the middle and at the end they all got mud attacked! Covered!!! poor things!!!!
There were also stalls where you get coloured mud and get painted different colours- as you can see from my pics we came across a Papa Smurf haha! Quality! After much muddy fun we headed to the beach to have a swim in the sea and get cleaned! The sea was far too rough for me tho- I had a quick dook and got my the hell ot of there! they were starting to sound the typhoon warning- sounded like air raid siren! Ofcourse no one even blinked an eye!
Got back to the apartment- 14 people and 1 shower! Not great!! haha! We eventually headed back to the beach to grab some chow. There was a nice restaurant selling seafood and Samgyopsal (a meat dish) so we ordered the latter.......however the waitress pointed to the menu to something that cost 50,000 won and said something in korean like ..."blah blah samgyopsal ok blah blah 50,000won betta blah blah" So we thought she meant this is a big portion of samgyopsal to feed you all and its only 50,000. So we all nodded along and agreed Nae kamsamnida!!
5 minutes later the set up the BBQ on our table then brought bowls of shells and sauce hhhmmmm???? So we asked again samgyopsal chuseyo?? and the wee woman looked very confused and just smiled. So we just got on with it....well not me, james or tom as we don't like seafood but they all whapped the shells in the Barby and got stuck in eeeeeekkkkk!
Samgyopsal never arrived :-( hahahaha!
We headed further along the beach back to the main area and found a family mart- like a little convenience store...where you can buy big bottles of beer and sit outside and drink them. Got eaten alive by Mozzys tho!! Found some shelter in a korean bar and started the drinking games with te soju. Don't worry Mum I ate something before!! The rest of the night was spent dancing on the beach at the main stage and having a ball!!! Then it was back to the good ol wooden floor for some shut eye!
The next day we woke to terrential rain so once we eventually got al our stuff packed up and crawled out of our hangover we headed off in the downpour to find the pizza shop. Delish! The pizza also brought out the sun so we were all happy and headed down to the sand for some sun and a swim in the sea. Jo and I went Sab hunting to try to dry off- my favourite past time! haha! However the rain started and we got soaked again!!! Didnt realise it at the time but got very burnt during the 30 mintues the sun was out! youuucch!!!After buying some natural mud from the stalls we headed to the train station for our journey back home!
Some great memories!!!!
