Hi All,
We arrived in Hawaii last night after a lot of travelling and waiting in airports. It certainly is humid and warm here. We were excited but tired. Maui is a somewhat rural area so there are not a lot of street lights or fancy things to see at night. Sheenah's dad was telling us so many facts and pointing into the dark but we couldn't see a darn thing. Once morning came we were able to get out and see the scenery, wow! The mountains are soooo massive! The entire island is basically 2 mountains so you can imagine how large they are. Check the photo gallery where we will upload the photos asap. Our internet connection is very slow here so it could take some time.
We drove up the larger mountain today, named Haleakala (House of the Sun). It was about a 45 minute drive up and very great sights along the way. Beautiful trees full of colorful flowers, eucaliptis forests, sights of the flatland between the mountains. We actually travelled through 4 different ecozones as we made the 10,023 foot elevation. A desert area, rain forest, pastureland and finally a sub alpine. So the variations in plant life were amazing. The top was surprizingly cold, windy and dry. Sheenah's ears were hurting from the cold winds pretty quickly and my hair was everywhere! It was a cloudy day but you could still see the big island from the summit.
In the afternoon, we headed to a beach in Kihei. The wind was picking up but the water was quite warm. By far the warmest pacific ocean water I've every experienced. Sheenah and I had a nice swim then we showered off and layed in the cloudy sun. After drying off we walked down the beach into a cool rocky area that felt somewhat secluded. Sheenah's mom, Denn, told us that turtles often hang out around there as well.
Now we are back home and as the girls are making some salad I am writing this. We will keep updating the page as much as possible.
