Avignon is hot!!! we arrived yesterday to 100 degrees and somewhat humid city. This is the first hot weather of the trip so we cant complain too much. we are staying in a nice little hotel in the center of town. The hotel itself did not have enough rooms for the group so we got moved to a studio apartment right around the corner. It is nice enough. The big upside is that it has a fridge in it to get our water cold, as well as a bottle of Chateuneuf-du-pape blanc we just bought from the winery (more on that later)
today started with a bus ride down to the Pont du Gard. It was amazing. such a huge bridge to have been built so long ago... we spent some time snapping photos and walking down by the river and tehn we were off...
To the city of Orange. It was market day, and what a treat. Fresh tomatoes, cheeses, an assortment of shiny meats, olives covered in garlic herbs, melons, strawberries, bagutte that had just come out of the oven, and this crazy good potato saute with onions and garlic made for an amazing picnic lunch on a hill overlooking the town.
after lunch, we finally made our way to the sacred land of Chateauneuf-du-pape (cndp). yeaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!! we had a tour and tasting at domaine du Mousset, a producer that is not in the U.S. and one I have never tried. It was fun. the soils of Cndp are all stones, big stones. think river rock size and bigger. very cool to see vines coming out of that! the wines were great.
a fun day all around
now we are waiting for the sun to go down so we can cool off, a task that will be helped with the previously mentioned bottle of Chateauneuf-du-pape blanc!
