Opinion paper - Tibet Protests - 4/18/08
In the following article, I will try to answer this question: Should the upcoming Olympic Game's, in China, be used as a vehicle to protest political issues, such as human rights in Tibet?
The protests we've already seen have varied from putting up banners, trying to steal the torch, to violent protests that end up with hundreds dead or jailed (it is currently unclear though, how many people have died during protests at this time). Also, the French President, Sarkozy, and Prince Charles of the UK may not attend the Olympics if China does not give Tibet human rights. Protests have already become violent, but I think that the protests will continue to become even worse.
About a century ago China invaded Tibet and made peace with them. They told Tibet that it could rule its self but China would just take most of Tibet's land. But China later broke all of these treaties. Tibet tried to Rebel against China but China attacked them and reinvaded Tibet. After that attack China sent the Dali lama, Tibet's greatest spiritual leader, into exile to India. Another problem is that China is a communist country, so they don't believe in religion, but Tibet is a very religious country. China is taking religion out of Tibet. The last problem is that China is sending their people to Tibet and it is over crowding Tibet's land. The Chinese are now blaming the Dali Lama for trying to sabotage, there Olympic games. The Dali Lama says he is willing to reason with the Chinese government.
It is a good Idea to protest during the Olympics, because it is the most watched show in the world. But it is bad because the Olympics should be about purely sport, not politics.
In my opinion the Olympics should be used as a time to protest human rights in Tibet. Please right your opinion on the message board.
