Florence, Italy is a beautiful town and has some of the best food you can find! While we were there, we stayed in two nice little (exclusive Resorts) apartments, with a breathtaking view of River Arno. Right above the river is the bridge Ponte Vechio. On the bridge are restaurants and Jewelry stores shaped like a treasure chests. The bridge was a place where people hung out.
When the second day arrived, we went to a large cathedral called the Duomo. The Duomo was fascinating because the inside of the dome had a beautiful fresco painting. In the center of the fresco, it looks like real people hanging over a ledge.
We also visited Palaza Vechio. It is currently a house for officials, a Medici palace full of secrets and a home of Fresco painting. The Medici (m-ed-ee-ch-ee) Family was a family of powerful rulers of Italy, such as Cosimo. The Medici family made a few secret passageways through the palace and we got to see them all. The passageways led to secret treasure rooms, which contained paintings and other rare items. Certain paintings could be pulled open and more valuable items were stored inside.
We also took an art class on Fresco painting. At the class, we learned how to paint using the Fresco style. Fresco is creating plaster, smoothing the plaster over tile, and painting over the plaster when it's still wet. They did this so the paint would sink into the plaster and the painting would last a long time. After Marco (our teacher) taught us this, we painted our own.
That night Ian and I made dinner for our parents. While they ate we put on a marionette show for them.
The next day we went and saw a sundial that still stands to this day. There was also a museum of astronomy, so we went in and learned how astronomy has
Developed; from Galileo's discoveries to more modern discoveries. That day, we went to the most beautiful sight I have ever seen… The statue of David! It was so smoothly constructed that it really looked, like David was standing there before me. We learned that Michelangelo made it with a block of discarded marble he found in a courtyard. He picked this marble because he thought it would be the right size, for what he was about to sculpt. It is an image of David holding his slingshot behind him. It shows that he used intelligence to defeat Goliath, not strength. We also saw some paintings by Botacheli, who was sometimes in the paintings.
I for one had a great time and a wonderful experience in Florence. I am stuffed from all the good food too. See you soon!
