Shane and Sarah's Adventures
Hola Everyone,
We are just about to leave Puerto Madryn for another 18 hour or so bus ride down to Rio Gallegos down south and thinking about making our way to the southern most town - Ushuaia.
We only stayed in Puerto Madryn last night and have spent the rest of the time out at Peninsula Valdes in a remote and rugged town on the atlantic coast. Its been pretty cold and windy but luckily got in a spot of whale watching whilst we were there.
The first morning we woke up at sunrise (about 8.30am) and Shane decided to go for a walk to see the sunrising and I was going to snuggle under the covers for 5 more minutes and then follow him down to the cold and windy beach. Anyway, 5 minutes later a breathless and very excited Shane returns and tells me to come quickly as whales are close to the beach and its awesome! I throw on my clothes and rush down to the beach to see the whales as the early morning sun rises. We climb up a rocky peninsula to get out a bit further to get a better view and I am so busy looking out to sea to see these huge water dwelling beasts that I dont see a watery hole in the rock formation that we are walking upon and my left leg falls right into the salty wet hole and I smash my right knee into a shelly rock and graze my very ungloved cold hands. OUCH IT HURTS!!! If I hadnt been in so much pain and my foot so cold I would have laughed so hard. I looked ridiculous on all 4`s on the rocks with my foot in a hole and Shane trying to be the loving husband and not crack up laughing! Poor me!
Anyway, later as the wind had died down (thankfully) and I had managed to dry off somewhat we went out on a boat for about an hour and a half and saw some pods of whales including a mother and her baby (apparently a young one being weaned from its mother but it looked pretty huge to us!). It was great being so 'up close and personal` with them on the choppy and windy waters there. Got a few good photos which we will upload shortly for you all but it was pretty cold out on the water and with no gloves our hands froze.
For the two nights out there we stayed in a quaint little cabin in the town and with a little gas hob were able to make ourselves hot coffees to warm up after whale watching on the boat (and from the beach) and walking around the very tranquil township.
Today at Puerto Madryn we could also see whales from the shore and took a quick cold walk out on a pretty long jetty to get a bit closer. One of the whales was jumping up in the water and thrashing his tail down hard on to the waves (its apparently a way of communicating to the rest of the pod) and making a big scene and dance. There were heaps of whales that we spotted from the jetty and we even got to see the famous tail dive where you see the whole tail come out of the water...makes a great photo but happens too quickly and it was way to cold to have the camera out for long enough to get that perfect snap. Amazing to see whales so close to the beach and town.
We have both really enjoyed being on such a rugged and windy coast but are looking forward to getting even colder down south and into some snow.
Will write more soon.
Love Sarah and Shane xx
