This was a jam packed day starting at 3am! We joined a couple from Columbia on the 4am bus to Paracas. When we got there we took a speed boat ride out to las Islas Ballestas (called the poor man's Galapagos) during which we got to see the candelabra lines in the sand along the way.(There are several theories as to its origin - pirates making a sailors sign, or Jose Martin's Mason sign, but the most likely is from the Nasca people since if you follow a straight line from the top you will arrive exactly at the Nasca lines (discovered by air in 1939).)Then we went by the Islas Ballestas (ballestas is a type of arrow shooter - called that because of all of the little arcs in the island shaped like that and the fact that pirates used to use them to attack Spanish ships from that island). There were tons of birds - different kinds of Peruvian boobies and even one grey headed Galapagos boobie. There were also cormorants, pelicans, Inca terns, oyster catchers and other kinds. We also saw Humbolt penguins and a TON of sea lions. The difference between sea lions and seals is that they have real external ears and seals don't.We also got to see the baby sea lions which were sooooooo cute! The guide made a comment about no one getting baptized by the birds and moments later Alie got pooped on!!Poor thing!!We were able to do a pretty good clean up job but it was still pretty gross!!As soon as we got back we took the bus to Nasca where we flew over the famous Nazca lines in the sand that have existed there for hundreds maybe thousands of years!Between the heat & the ups and downs of the plane it was a trip for my stomach but I survived. We took the bus home & didn't get back until almost midnight but on the bus we played Bingo & Alie won a bottle of Pisco! How exciting!
