My cousin Alie & I stayed in the ritzier Miraflores section of Lima the first 2 days.Day 1 we took a Mirabus tour that took us past Pachacamac - the ruins of an indigenous play area.We then got to see some buildings in downtown Lima as well as go into the monastery of San Francisco and into the catacombs below. It was pretty freaky to see all the bones, especially the skulls!Afterwards we went through San Isidrio which connects the center to Miraflores. There was a big statue of the archangel Michael there. Once we got to Miraflores again we drove by Love Park that has a statue of a couple kissing as well as tons of colored tiles decorated w/ love sayings. We then drove all along the shore until we got back to the Miraflores park.On the street we were offered to try some cremoladas - fruit creams so we went in to a cute little store and tried some new fruits - lucuma, which I didn't like, camucamu which was a little sour, and aguaymanto which was pretty good.(I still don't know what they are in English!)That night I also ate my first red & white fish cebiche (spelled w/ a b in Peru) and pique criollo - a mix of traditional things like fried cheese sticks, yucca balls, chicken balls & some meat on a stick at the restaurant Vista al mar in the fancy Larcomar complex. We got the last table overlooking the ocean and even tried the famous pisco sour drink which wasn't bad - it tasted a little like a margarita.
Day 2 we hung out w/ Alejandro, a guy from Buenos Aires who was travelling solo. We walked down to the beach. It was all rocky, no sand and only surfers there. We touched the water though and it was not too cold at all, but certainly not warm enough outside for swimming! We walked into the fancy restaurant over the water, La Rosa Nautica but decided it was too expensive to eat there. We then walked to the Love Park & took a bunch of photos and read the little romantic lines all over the tiles. At night we moved to downtown Lima and went to see the light and sound fountain show. The fountains were so beautiful! We saw part of the show w/ sound & the laser lights and walked through a water tunnel. It was really cool!
Days 3 & 4 in Lima came after our jungle tour & Cuzco/Machu Pichu trip.Day 3 I was still w/ my cousin and we checked out Chinatown. When I asked a cop for directions he ended up talking to me about global warming - it was pretty funny!!On our way we ate some great fresh pineapple, maracuya (passion fruit) juice, and pomegranate. We also checked out a market that had chickens hanging upside down.Eeew! We then took a bus to some ruins in Miraflores but by the time we got there due to an idiot bus driver they were closed and we couldn't visit them - oh well, so we had ice cream instead!
I spent my last day in Lima by myself.I visited a really nice free museum that had a lot of Incan stuff as well as some modern paintings.I then took the hour bus tour around Lima which was pretty good.I then did some shopping back to the USA I went!
