Arrived safely in Johannesburg after a 12 hour flight from Hong Kong. Glad we stopped over in HK. We had a good 8 hour sleep prior to taking on the next leg. We were met by Andre who will be our guide for the entire trip. Since we were not tired we began touring immediately. The first stop was the Voortrekker Monument commemorating the Dutch settlers who in 1835 began moving inland from the coastal Cape area rather than submit to British rule. In doing so they engaged in numerous battles with the black natives, particularly the Zulu. We continued touring Pretoria and stopped at Melrose House which was the site of the signing of the treaty ending the Boer War in 1902 with the surrender of the Dutch Afrikaan states to the British. We got to our hotel a little after noon and have had a relaxing afternoon, trying desperately to stay awake until after dinner. It will be early to bed tonight.
