Mendoza is my new happy place... compared to Santiago the food has been amazing. I don't think I will ever find another place in South America with food like this...
After a 7 hour bus drive out of Santiago with Andesmar we made it into Argentina and into Mendoza. A special mention right now to the bus... As soon as we got on we got lollies, then tea and coffee (NOTE everything in South America comes inundated with sugar - diet Coke here is sweeter than normal coke back home...). A little later we got 7-Up and biscuits, then another round of tea and coffee. The seats were ULTRA comfy and Kirbs and I spent most of the time asleep! lol. There was of course the minor misunderstanding at the start of the journey where we didn't realise seats were allocated... Ooops... hahaha
We had to get off the bus for passport control which was FREEZING and where they went through all our bags - luckily no contraband! hahaha We didn´t really know what was going on and we got off into a shed in the middle of the snow fields while they stamped our passports and got us immigrated... lol
So - we arrived in Mendoza and had a 10 block walk with our 40+kg between us... the streets were dead (we later found out it's a public holiday!). Luckily a local gave us a short cut, so we made it to the hostel in quick time... The 6 bed room we booked turned out to be 8 beds, and 24 ppl sharing 3 bathrooms is a bit of a logistical nightmare, but I guess you get that...
Last night we went to the most life-changing restaurant... Thanks to Matt's generosity Kirbs and I had 600 pesos to spend at Francesco. If you EVER come to Mendoza you HAVE to eat there... The food was to die for especially after all the fried food in Santiago. The waiters suggested BEAUTIFUL wine for us both to drink (yep - I drank and enjoyed wine) and we even got a sneak peek into the wine cellar. The food was so good, we both took pictures of it all!!! lol The funniest part was despite ordering 3 courses each and wine, we only spent 400 pesos including a tip! The waiters were really cool too, taking us into the wine cellar!
Today we had a bit of a rude awakening when we realised that we were running an hr late... so departure from the restaurant was at 12:30 not 11:30... lol. Our bus came to collect us for the Winery Tour and we were off and running. The wines were hardly the highlight as we met some great people on the bus with fantastic advice! Joe and Em thanks for all the tips!!
Lunch was DIVINE and we ate beyond our content again (check out the pics of the spread we started with, then add another 4 dishes each, plus dessert) with all you could drink Melbec (if ONLY I drank red...). Our bus dropped us back at the hostel (Kirbs leaving the wine she bought on the bus.... lol) but we've already made plans to meet up with Joe and Em tonight for drinks!
Tomorrow night we head off to Iguazu then over to Salta, after we spend the day hunting down the amazing restaurants we got recommended today...! We're making the most of the food while we can!!! :)
Hope you´re all well - wish you could fly over to eat this food!!!!
