This is crocodile country! And yes, we saw a few. Luckily for us it was very close, but not supa close. Our day in the Daintree Rainforest began with a cruise along the Daintree River. Our boatman and guide, Lex ( short for Lex he told us ) grew up here and had a great sense of humor. Our boat excursion provided us the opportunity to see a couple of crocodiles, green vine snake, frogmouth (nocturnal bird), great egret, kingfisher, sugarbirds, and heaps of swallows that chased our boat. A final delight was seeing the Ulysses Swallowtail butterfly. A protected species with vibrant blue wings and an erratic flight pattern. They are drawn to the nectar of bright flowers and especially like pink.
We continued on our own through the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area towards Cape Tribulation, stopping along the way to eat fresh fruit ice cream(blueberry, apricot, wattleseed and soursop), walk along a couple of rainforest tracks showcasing it's diverse habitats and biodiversity( swamp and mangrove, eucalyptus woodlands and tropical rainforest) and buying local Daintree Tea.
A few facts (courtesy of Lonely Planet): this area covers only 0.01% of Australia's surface area, but has 36% of the continent's mammal species, 50% bird species, 60% butterfly species and 65% of it's fern species.
