Continuing north we skipped along the coastlines, from the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Capricorn Coast, Whitsunday Coast and the North Coast. Observing acre after acre of sugarcane fields, cane railways and sugar refineries. Warning signs for the Cassowary, koalas, and kangaroos. A close encounter with an extremely large black eagle swooping by our van, scattering the hawks on a recent road kill. Airlie beach with its beachside swimming lagoon and backpackers sunning themselves. We spent our night dining alfresco with fruit bats overhead, and very loud cockatoos. Across the street $4 drinks and some pokies. Our van 'Brockie' started to give us a bit of a hard time...not idling all that well then the engine quitting when we tried to come to a stop. It only got worse. Part of the adventure, but so close to being done with our drive we just wanted to make it to Cairns. In Mission Beach we sought out a mechanic and almost slept in their parking lot, but instead stayed in the main town, closer to coffee in the morning. Which proved to be the right thing, the mechanic wouldn't look at our van until next Tuesday, a week away. Directions to another mechanic which told me, "I can't be bothered!" then promptly turned and walked away from us. Not a very happy moment. Decision made to keep driving as we were almost to Cairns. And just hope we make it.
Sputter, cough, cough along the final 150 kilometers, until we finally rolled into the Wicked station. Turns out they have had some trouble with bad gas. That makes two of us.
