Arrived in Christchurch last night. Our host Bruce collected us at the airport. We saw some of the major damage from the earthquakes. The city is still struggling to repair and recover, and many areas of the city are closed, and some families still displaced from their homes- as water and sewer lines need to be fixed. There is a lot of work to be done and it will take some time. We'll be walking around today and will really get a chance to see how the city was affected.
As a welcome to New Zealand we were treated to a lovely wakening at 3 a.m. by a rousing earthquake! Just like being at Disneyland...only scarier, because it was followed by a second one around 6 a.m. Christchurch had an aftershock last week measuring around 4.3 (not sure what classifies as aftershock or as another earthquake). Will check the news as to what last night measured, so I can compare.
Just checked the news - it was a 5.3! Second was 3.4
Much of the city residents are shaken and didn't get much sleep. It's been a difficult several months since the first quake in September 2010, then the big one in February.
Considered aftershocks because the location is the same as the previous quakes.

Andrew Lordy, darlings! There is some drama going on in your trip. Must be shocking to just sort of "land" in the middle of it all.
