The city of Dunedin is regarded as the best preserved Victorian and Edwardian heritage city in the southern hempishere. The Dunedin Railway Station is the most photographed building in NZ. On the morning after our arrival we were lucky enough to attend the farmer's market at the train station. Not only fresh produce, cheeses, meets, but local student brewed beer, espresso stands, live cooking demonstrations, live music, crepes and waffles. About 1/5 of Dunedin's population are students giving the city a funky, collegiate feel. Top tourist stops are Cadbury world - a tour of the famed chocolate factory, and a student favorite Speight's Brewery! delicious brew since 1876. A real treat at Speight's is the public tap. This tap is for fresh spring water (not beer) that flows from below the brewery, still used in today's beer. Every year about 1,000,000 liters of water is used by locals and tourists from the public tap.
From Dunedin we spent the day driving out an along the Otago peninsula. Beautiful coast line drive, and visits to the Royal Albatross Center, Penquin Place, Larnach Castle. The weather was on our side - sunshine the whole way.
