Cape Reinga is the meeting place of the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The crashing of the waves some 10 meters high, called the Columbia Maelstrom. This is a spiritual place for Maori where the spirits of the departed leap to begin the voyage back to their final resting place in the ancestral homeland. There is a solitary tree on a rock outcrop that aides in their departure, the roots forming a staircase to the seas. The DOC park at Cape Reinga is incredible. Well designed and informative. Plaques lining the pathways are made of different elements - wood, metal and stone, each telling of some historic or cultural significance of the area. A beautiful concept that more parks should embrace. We went on a four hour tramp down the cliffs to one of the beaches, along the beach then back. No one else around except the birds and crashing waves.
