Saz and Dave's travels
Today we woke up at 8:30ish feeling a bit tired and went and got some breakfast. Whilst we were getting ready we didn't bother to keep the noise down and kept the alarm going for longer than necessary to teach those Dutch guys a lesson! Whilst eating breakfast we had a chat with the girl on reception and found out there were actually 3 blokes next door and that they were leaving today. Excellent news!
We were picked up at about 9:30am by a songthaew along with about 15 other people and taken to Ao Nang beach. Here we split into 2 groups - those for the speed boat trip around the 4 islands (mainly neatly dressed Japanese tourists with high heels) and those for the longtail boat trip. We were in the latter group partly because it was about a third of the price of the other trip and partly because we wanted more of an authentic experience!
There were about 25 people in total on the longtail boat which was powered by a very noisy motor that is attached to a propellor on a pole and placed from the back of the boat into the sea. We weren't too cramped though as most people squashed together at the front of the boat, leaving us with plenty of room at the back!
The first stop-off point was Poda Island, a lovely white, sandy beach. Here we were given the option to borrow snorkels which we decided to go for. Dave immediately took to snorkelling and was off like a fish however I was a bit unsure. I didn't like the feeling of only being able to breathe through my mouth and also using a snorkel that someone else had had in their mouth! I decided to just use the mask part which was really cool as there were loads of fish really close to us and we even saw a jellyfish! It makes you realise how much is going on beneath the surface of the sea that you aren't aware of!
After swimming for quite a while we got back in the boat and went to Chicken Island - the island actually looks like a chicken! Here we jumped off the side of the boat into some really deep and clear water. It was amazing! Through the snorkel you could see the coral and loads of cool fish. I still didn't really get the hang of breathing through the snorkel and kept getting sea water in my mouth! Dave was much better than me and stayed in the sea for ages!
After drying off on the boat, our 3rd stop of the day was Taloo Island, Here we were given lunch of rice, egg and a bit of chicken in sauce, which we took up the hill to eat under the shade of some trees. When the sun went in we lay on the sand for a bit with our books until it started to rain! We didn't actually mind sitting in the rain it was quite refreshing but everyone else got back on the boat (wimps) making us think it was time to go and we got back on the boat too. We sat there for quite a while under the plastic canopy of the boat, eating some pineapple while it poured with rain.
It was still raining when we got to the final stop of the day - Phra Nang beach (The princess Bay). We were told we had an hour here - quite a long time in the rain! We decided to sit under a tree and get a coke and then have a walk up the beach which was nice. It was a lovely beach with impressive cliffs and a cave at one end.
We got back to out bungalow at about 5pm to blissfull quiet - no more irritating boys!
Later we went out and bought some really cheap thai whiskey and coke and had some pre-dinner drinks in the bungalow garden. The whiskey was pretty rank but ok with coke! We got some tea which was delicious but I won't bore you with the details as I believe some of you think we are a little obsessed with the old food! Just you wait until we get home and cook you some Thai food then you will understand!
