Saz and Dave's travels
Today we got up early, had breakfast and checked out of the Phi Phi Hotel at about 8:45 am as we had been told that our transfer boat to Krabi would be leaving at 9am. However after trekking all the way to the pier with our heavy bags, we were told the boat that we needed was not actually departing until 3:30 pm!
Feeling pretty pissed off that we had been given the wrong information and checked out so early for no reason, we walked back to our hotel and took over a few seats in the lobby for the morning, along with a few others who were also waiting for boats. We spent the next few hours reading our books - Dave is now reading the b**** Goddess Notebook as he has whizzed through his books and has now had to resort to reading mine!
We had lunch at our favourite cheap shack, had a look round the shops, read a bit more of our books then finally it was time to go and get the boat. It was a bit precarious getting on the boat as you had to walk along a very narrow, quite long walkway with low rails along each side. This was particularly difficult with big heavy bags and I thought I would drop mine over the edge!
The boat was pretty packed and we had to sit inside along with quite a few other smelly travellers - I hope we don't smell as bad as them!
The boat trip lasted about 3 hours in total, by the time we had stopped to drop some people of at a different beach, and we got to Ao Nang (Krabi) at about 6:30pm.
We were booked into the Mild Bungalows Resort in Nopparat Thara, the next bay down from Ao Nang and luckily there was a free bus waiting to meet us at the port.
When we arrived at the Mild Bungalows we were pretty pleased with our accomodation. There were about 10 bungalows here, set in a beautiful garden with loads of flowers and a pond with a fountain! It's about 10 minutes walk away from the major road through Nopparat Thara so it's fairly quiet here which is nice. However when we were shown our bungalow we realised it may not be as quiet as we initially hoped! The bungalow was actually split into two rooms with an inner lockable door between the two and the walls must have been paper-thin as we could hear if not understand every word our neighbours said. It sounded like a couple of Dutch guys and we just hoped that they wouldn't be too noisy later on.
After a shower we headed out for some food and a look around. It's always a bit strange arriving somewhere at night as it is difficult to tell what the place is really like in the dark and here was no exception. To get to the main road, where we hoped the restaurants would be, we had to walk for about 10 minutes down a very dark road with no street lights. I was a bit scared of rabid dogs but none turned up which was good! When we got to the main road we found about 6 restaurants in total stretched out along the road and only about 6 other tourists. The place had quite an odd feel to it as there were plenty of bars but they were all empty. There was also a strange fair with loud music, packed full of locals with the usual games such as knock down a bottle to win a prize (the prizes were all really tacky though). When we had a look around we were the only tourists in sight!
We went for tea at the cheapest place that we could find called Blue Ba You, where the food turned out to be really nice. We got a sizzling sea food hot plate and a red curry (which was actually yellow) along with fruit shakes and a chocolate chip ice cream - great stuff!
On the way back to our bungalow we stopped off for drinks - I got a black russian and Dave got a whiskey and we played cards. Back at the room it seemed quiet so the Dutch guys must have still been out. As our room was full of mosquitos we had to rig up our mosquito nets - yay we can finally use them! We must have got to sleep quite quickly but at about 1am we were woken up by the Dutch guys banging their way in. Luckily they stopped their racket after about half an hour leaving us to sleep!
