Saz and Dave's travels
Today we had a bit of a lie in before going for our free breakfast at the reception. We got egg, toast, sausage, juice and coffee which was nice, and we sat and contemplated what to do. The reception was kitted out with a multitude of posters and leaflets advertising activities such as rock climbing, kayaking, elephant riding and trips around the various nearby islands. However we decided to spend today just chilling around Nopparat Thara and checking it out and go on a trip of the 4 islands tomorrow.
After wandering around today we found that Nopparat Thara is a bit of strange place. When we walked the 10 minutes to the beach we found that it was really coarse sand with quite a lot of broken glass and glass bottles lying around. The sea was incredibly shallow for about 500m out and the sea was boiling hot because of this. there was also no shade at all. For these reasons we decided not to go for a swim but to walk up to the other end of the beach where it looked a bit nicer. The beach is pretty massive so the walk took about 30 minutes but it was good to get some exercise. However the other end of the beach was no better than where we started and here there were hundreds of locals, enjoying their saturday in the sea (which was still miles away) and having picnics. Feeling a bit hot, we sat under a bit tree and people watched for a while which was quite interesting.
After a while discussing the world at length we walked back to where we started and felt a bit deflated as we felt the travel company had put us in a bit of a crap spot with nothing to do. To make things worse the guidebook was incredibly sparse of information regarding the Ao Nang area so that wasn't much help either.
When we tried to get some lunch at a nearby restaurant, everything we requested off the menu was unavailable and we found out it was the cook's day off! Not letting this defeat us we left that restaurant and got some food at the place we ate at last night. Feeling energised we then went and booked a longtail boat trip for tomorrow around 4 of the nearby islands, as we didn't want to spend another day around Nopparat Thara!
We spent the rest of the day around our bungalow chilling and watching the reality TV channel (how lazy - but Steph this channel has cheaters!). We then went to the internet where we met a really friendly geordie girl called Karen who told us about loads more stuff that you can do round here. She was so helpful and disappeared for a while only to return with 2 good maps of the area which she gave us. This improved our moood a great deal - we were lucky to have met Karen.
After tea and drinks we went back for an earlyish night and to watch a bit more TV. The Dutch guys next door were being really loud and you could hear them singing and it sounded like they were clapping and slapping each other! They were obviously pretty pissed and at one point kicked the door joining our rooms together. This all carried on til about 12am at which point something snapped inside me and for some reason I yelled 'nob heads' at the top of my voice. This must have had some effect as they quietened down after that until about 4am when they woke us up by knocking loudly on our door and singing. Feeling really knackered we waited for the racket to finish and finally got to sleep about 5am! This was pretty annoying as we had to be up at 8:30am the next day for our 4 islands boat trip! Nevermind - it's all part of the travelling experience.
